Course Description
 
本課程探討語言與文化之間複雜、微妙的關係,以及語言如何反映跟型塑人的生活方式與信念。課程內容焦點將會放在身份認同與其所必然牽涉的性別、族群、階級、全球化等各種權力關係,也會觸及語言的演化與歷史相關議題。上課主題將從華語的多樣性出發,檢視臺灣的多語文化現象,擴及到中國、香港、新加坡等地因全球化與在地化所造成的華語多樣性。接著課程進入比較英式英文與美式英文的不同與這些不同如何表現出兩個英語系大國的文化差異。最後課程將介紹最近的社會科學研究理論,探討不同的語言系統如何影響人類行為。透過本課程,學生將能理解語言不是透明的溝通工具,而是歷史、文化與意識形態的承載體,更是型塑我們看世界的關鍵媒介。
This course will explore the complex and often inexplicit relationship between language and culture and examine the ways in which a human language reflects and shapes the ways of life and beliefs of its speakers. Focus will be placed on topics such as identity, gender, race, class, power relations, history, evolution of language, and issues of globalization. We will start by looking at the multiple languages in Taiwan, the globalization of Mandarin in Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and China, and the diversity in the Chinese languages. Then we will shift the focus to some differences between British English and American English and discuss how these differences are connected to some specific cultural and social relationships in the U.K. and the U.S. respectively. Finally, recent theories of social science regarding languages and human behavior will be introduced. Through this course, students will be able to understand that language is not only a repository of history, culture, and ideology but also a medium which shapes how we see the world.
